Debbie Perry is a busy Mom of three humans and one canine. When not working in her day job with Fredericton Tourism, Debbie plots her next adventure that usually involves taking a path less travelled, with kids and dog in tow. “One of the best ways to explore is to get lost” says Debbie, who recently did just that when attempting to find a waterfall in the back woods of Nackawic with only her paper GPS in hand!

“Fall” in Love with Fredericton Trails!

It’s the most wonderful time of year!  Gone are the humidity and bugs, replaced by brisk mornings, gloriously warm afternoons and a riot of colours that make this season so awesome!  That’s why it’s the perfect time to experience the robust 120 km trail system that Frederictonians are so proud of and some pretty cool hiking spots that will definitely have you snapping a few Instagram-worthy pics!

Here’s a few of my fave routes!

Nashwaak Trail

If you are a fall foliage fanatic like I am, you will truly feel immersed in the season as you take to this almost 8-kilometer-long trail.  Start at the Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge and follow the signs for the Nashwaak Trail.  Expect some pretty breathtaking views of the Nashwaak River in its glory (note: biking this trail may lead to unintended accidents due to gazing at your surroundings!).

On this trail, be sure to stop at the newest hot spot, “The Landing”! Part café serving beer on tap, fresh brewed coffee and ice cream, and part bike shop.

For more inspiration, check out my running routes blog that references this trail and other run/walk/bike-worthy treks! Option: do “the loop!” – start on the Gibson trail, cross Bridge Street to loop back on the Nashwaak Trail towards Fredericton – a very respectable 10 km loop!

Odell Park

Even if you are not a tree afficionado, you’ll still appreciate the fact that this is one of Canada’s best old growth forests with 16 kilometers of trails that take you to areas where trees have stood for over 400 years!

Killarney Lake

This is a must-do whether you are walking or biking.  The trail begins at Killarney Lake, where you can take a leisurely walk around the perimeter of this freshwater lake or if you are feeling like you need more, the trail extends to 20 km of footpaths where you will be sure to glimpse some pretty astounding colours!  Check out our blog, “The Top 8 Places to take Fall Photos” for some more great ideas!

Currie Mountain

Did you know? Currie Mountain was actually the site of an ancient volcano dating back almost 350 million years ago!  You can get to this trail either by car (a short 10 minute drive from downtown Fredericton) or you can hop on your bike on the Northside Trail towards Douglas.  Read all about Currie Mountain in our blog here.

Mactaquac Provincial Park

After Currie Mountain, continue on to Mactaquac! The name means “where the river is red” in Maliseet; fitting as you’ll see plenty of red (leaves) reflecting on the headpond! It seems that when the end of September hits, this area is transformed into a rainbow of fall colours; you can hike the 10 km of trails that surround the park; it’s not strenuous so great for the kids!

Fred Taproom Trail

Another great way to experience Fredericton and its trails is through our local craft brewers! The #FredTapTrail is a network of 11 taprooms that will definitely give you a breadth of the variety of great beer we brew right here.

South Riverfront and Lincoln Trails

The South Riverfront Trail spans 3.6 km along the side of the beautiful Wolastoq River. Stop into local shops and restaurants as you pass by the heart of Fredericton’s downtown area, or continue on to the Lincoln trail. The Lincoln trail covers 8.8km, passing by the river and through private gardens..

Feeling adventurous? Try the Marysville Bike Park!

Named after the nearby Marysville Place, the MVP trails are considered by many to be the heart of riding in Fredericton. Managed by River Valley Cycling, you’ll find a mix of hand-built and machine built trails and a great variety of riding. New riders will love the flow of Bunkerama and more experienced riders can develop progressive skills in the ‘enduro zone’. Make sure to visit the Mark Boldon Memorial Skills Park. This trailhead has more than 35 km of year-round singletrack (groomed for fatbike in the winter), although a recent closure of some private lands has recently reduced that total.

MVP is a mix of provincial and private property so be sure to obey any posted signs. The parking lot can fill up on a nice day. If there’s no room left please park at Marysville Place (1 km away). Do not park along Route 8.

Where will your feet or bike take you this fall?  Make sure Fredericton is on your list to soak up the last vestiges of warm sun and glorious colours that the season bestows! Be sure to check out our website for even more ideas and inspiration!
