Freddy Foodie’s Fave Spots for Food Lovers

Wondering where to tickle your taste buds while in New Brunswick’s capital? We’ve had our resident food expert @Freddy.Foodie give us a rundown of their fave places to eat in Fredericton.
From cultural eats to patisserie treats, and everything delicious in between – here’s a list of some of 2022’s hotspots around town for you to check out:
11th Mile YFC
Serving up some serious flavors in town is the chic but cozy 11th Mile located in downtowns historic York St. With decorative plates, gourmet bites, and craft cocktails this restaurant won’t disappoint if you’re looking for a well-rounded experience. They also have, in our opinion, one of the best curated wine lists in the whole city! For a great night out, with an exceptional atmosphere 11th Mile is the place to be.
Moco Downtown
Next on our list of our fave haunts is Moco Downtown which specializes in Italian cuisine. From cheesy arincini to the best calamari around, these dishes will satisfy even the largest of appetites. If its pasta you’re craving, they have a wide variety of dishes packed full of flavor for you to choose from; like the classics such as spaghetti and meatballs, to something new like their handmade mushroom ravioli which is slathered in a decadent truffle cream sauce. Moco is great for a dinner date or a girls’ night out but is not to be overlooked for lunch, as their daytime menu is just a varied and mouthwatering as their evening one!
Maxwells @ The Crowne Plaza
Looking for a spot that uses fresh, locally sourced ingredients and is conscientious about seasonality? Look no further than Maxwell’s restaurant downtown at the Crowne. To begin, they grow their own herbs and veg in the summer with their rooftop garden, and even keep bees to produce honey; which is used for a special in house mead, made in collaboration with Pollen Angels meadery. With frequent, seasonal menu changes, they always manage to think outside the box when it comes to playing with different flavors and textures.
Wolastoq Wharf
Craving some maritime seafood? Then, this is the spot for you. With generous portions and the freshest fish around, Wolastoq Wharf has a reputation for being the best fine dining seafood spot in town. Not only do they specialize in all things seafood, they serve fresh baked bannock and molasses with every meal, making it a cultural experience as well as a top spot for foodies. Bannock is a traditional type of bread indigenous to the native communities of North America. Try one of their best-selling dishes which is on the menu year round; their epic seafood fettucine which is loaded with fresh shrimp, scallop, lobster, and mussels. Be sure to bring your appetite though, we weren’t kidding about their portion sizes!
Chess Piece Patisserie
Pastry lovers unite! This quaint, downtown Parisian style café is not to be overlooked; with all of their baking done in the classic French style, this is a true Patisserie in every sense of the word. To begin, they have the BEST croissants and pain au chocs in town. Chess Piece is a great little place to kick off your day, or pop in for lunch on the go. We’re personally infatuated with their exquisite desserts, but our absolute faves have to be their macarons that NEED to be tasted to be believed. Each bite is as decadent and light as the last, and will leave you wanting more and more and more. We just can’t get enough!
The Abbey Café
This one’s for the vegans and avid vegetarians amongst us, and wow, do these guys ever do a great job with flavors. The Abbey Café has a laid back, hipster vibe. Inside, their ceiling is cast with string lights and their walls are adorned with artwork from local creatives. A cool, larger-than-life spice rack takes center stage in the middle of the room which serves as a precursor to the types of flavors you can expect from their dishes. Our fave lunchtime plate has got to be their roasted red pepper panini but if you’re just looking for a mid-morning “pick me up”, they serve locally roasted Whitney coffee and have the best vegan baking in town! Treat yourself to one of their yummy zucchini muffins or their delicious black bean brownies.
Byblos
Located at the tail end of Queen Street is an unassuming family-run spot called Byblos. Specializing in Lebanese cuisine, this place is light, airy and full of fresh food! From crisp, juicy salads to their infamous baklava, it’s become a favorite haunt amongst downtown locals. Check out their bestselling dish – the Kofta, which is a meat based Lebanese type sausage/meatball. Did we mention that they have a full bar on site and some of the freshest décor in town?
Monks & Jonesie
From the creators of one of Fredericton’s favorite food trucks comes their full sized bar and restaurant! Their menu is an eclectic mix of flavors and dishes, from their food truck faves such as the infamous pulled duck naanwich, to newer items like their pork belly adobo bowls – we just love what they have to offer! These guys really know what they’re doing when it comes to making great food, just try their incredible chicken and waffles: Crunchy chicken, applewood smoked bacon, an over easy egg, grated cheese, all sandwiched between two crispy waffles that have been drizzled in a sriracha maple brown butter. Absolutely Mouthwatering!
Clearly this list could go on, but we’ve kept it tight to showcase a varied sample of what our beautiful city has to offer fellow food lovers. We have a wide array of options for you to choose from, with something different to suit even the pickiest of eaters.
