Stellar Sunrise & Sunsets in Fredericton

Orange, pink, gold, purple, blue – what’s your favorite sunrise or sunset color combo? It’s nearly impossible to choose! We here in Fredericton are blessed with being home to the Majestic Saint John River, dividing the Capital City into the North and South side. There is no point in arguing which side has it better when it comes to sunset views; the one thing we can at least agree on is that both sides have it made when it comes to the shared reflection of our city that is captured in the beloved Wolastoq waters.
Sunsets and Silhouettes
Lets’ begin on Fredericton’s Northside (not choosing favorites!); a great summer evening begins with a locally brewed craft beer from the Picaroons Roundhouse. This is the perfect opportunity to pick up your very own Fredericton Taproom Trail map, featuring 10 local taprooms; buy a brew or flight, get a stamp and start working towards collecting exclusive #FredTapTrail swag.
Not only does the Picaroons Roundhouse offer a large outdoor seating area perfect for bringing your pooch, 540 North, Queen Street Creamery and The Tipsy Muse Espresso Bar (Thursdays-Sundays only) are also onsite! To make your evening even more delightful, we highly recommend sticking around for sundown; just a hop skip and jump away is Carleton Park, where you can witness a prime sunset view, featuring the silhouette of Fredericton’s city scape

The View from Center Stage
Our next stop is only a stones’ throw away but still an experience all on its own. It should come as no surprise that the Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge made the cut, with a specific note about the sunrise and sunsets that can be captured from there. A hot spot for selfies at any given time, The Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge is in its prime during sunrise and sun-fall, offering a picturesque view of both the north and southside of Fredericton.
Pink Sky at Night
The classic sunrise or sunset photo up from the water never gets old. If you have your own method of floatation, the Saint John or Nashwaak River are the perfect hosts to catching the vibrant rays; it’s hard to argue a better way to take in a sunrise, then when you’re floating in the middle of it!
When the Light is Right
If a great sunrise or sunset is in the forecast, we can always count on a glorious riverside view. Sometimes though, we happen to be in the right place at the right time to catch the vibrant hues over the tree line or reflected in a stream or pond. We can’t really suggest where to catch this glimpse of nature at its best, but we can attest to the fact that Fredericton is surrounded by natural beauty and it’s not hard to be caught in the moment of mother nature doing her thing. After polling locals about their favorite sunset locations, some shared views from the banks of Marysville along the Nashwaak River, during a hike through the UNB woodlot uptown, the shades of pink filling ponds in Hyla Park, or a sunset that emerged at the perfect moment during a round of golf.
Although it may seem that we have mapped out a “tour,” we urge you to take in the sunrise or sunset views from one place at a time! As you already know, both never lasts as long as we would like; in the blink of an eye, the most perfect hues can begin to fade. Since each space is worth a full viewing, it’s best that you stay an extra night, or come back for a visit so you can try to catch them all. Now is a great time to #ExploreFredericton, we can’t promise perfect sunset weather, but we can say that Fredericton is more than just a pretty face, it’s a Cultural Capital with adventure, history, cold brews and tasty eats, waiting for you!
