Local Food Love: 4 Can’t Miss Fredericton Restaurants

Fiddleheads in the spring. Corn on the cob in the fall. Lobster on Father’s Day. Strawberry pie on Canada Day. This was my childhood growing up in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.
There is something magical about good, local food. The way it makes people dance in their seat. The way it can turn a tough day around. Making gingerbread houses. Grinding coffee. Melting butter on popcorn. Roasting marshmallows over fire.
These are rituals. Small little ceremonies shared with family and friends. And while it is massively important to an individual, we share it unselfishly, preferring to eat together, even if it is scarce.
I’ll always splurge on good food. I’ll always share good food. Fredericton has great places to do both.
I’m a world traveller by trade. Spending most of the past decade exploring some of the most remote corners of our planet; Socotra, Turkmenistan, Bangladesh. While I’ve had some incredible meals in these places, there’s something special about the food you grew up with. They call it comfort food for a reason. It’s the stuff that picked you up on a rainy day. It’s more than just the taste. The memories are just as nourishing as the calories.
When I’m home, there are a few restaurants I always visit. Ones that make me feel home, and that’s what this blog post (and video) are about. Here’s my top 4:
The Palate
For their Fresh & Exciting local dishes. It’s impossible to have a bad meal here. I was even more impressed after meeting the Chef and his wife in the kitchen. A gem in Fredericton.
Monks & Jonesie
For their innovative mouthwatering menu items like pulled duck Naan-wich and waffle cut sweet potato fries. Delicious.
Wolastoq Wharf
This indigenous-owned Northside restaurant serves the Atlantic Ocean’s bounty like no other. Try their Seafood risotto and melt. This place is incredible.
Milda’s Pizza & More
The pizza king (and queen) of Fredericton. These woodfired masterpieces use local ingredients like New Brunswick Pepperoni and fiddle heads. It’s the best slice in town.
When food is good, we always joke that the “secret ingredient is love”. But why can’t that be the truth? While it’s never on the recipe card, it’s that secret ingredient that makes all the difference. It’s in how you knead the bread, how big that pinch of salt is, it’s how you check the oven twice before continuing forward. With good food, it’s always in there... somewhere.
I’ve listed 4 of my favourite local restaurants here in Fredericton, but I can’t say I’ve tried them all. There are so many incredible places to eat local in this beautiful city! This summer while we’re exploring a little closer to home, maybe you can give one of these a try, or, even better, let us know which ones top your list.
