Meet You at the Market!
It’s no secret that Fredericton loves markets! Although we are missing the festive atmosphere of the Garrison Night Market this summer, we still have the tradition of Saturday mornings spent at the Fredericton Boyce Farmers’ Market, and the smorgasbord of ethnic cuisine at the Cultural Market. Now there are two more markets on the scene where you can shop for handmade and homegrown.
Depending on the day of the week, you have a choice of several different markets all located quite close together! This itinerary is a guide to help you catch them all in a day, so pack your mask, grab your shopping basket, and head out to #SupportFredLocal!
Day 1 – Saturday
First stop, since they open early, is the Fredericton Boyce Farmers Market located at 665 George Street.
Named one of the Top 10 Markets to visit in Canada (Canadian Geographic Traveler, June 2009) the market is a favourite Saturday morning tradition for both locals and visitors. The Market is open every Saturday, 7am to 1pm. Farmers, artisans, and craftspeople offer a tempting variety of fresh meat, garden vegetables, home baked goods, maple syrup, flowers, handcrafts, jewelry and more! Some of the vendors have been here for several generations and are as interesting as their wares!
*The Boyce re-opened in June in phases and most vendors are back. Masks are mandatory and a limited number of people are allowed inside at one time.
The Cultural Market
The newly relocated Cultural Market is also downtown at 435 King Street. Its unique offering of international food and local delicacies is now open 6 days a week. Criss-cross the globe simply by crossing the market with its wide variety of international dishes. Open Monday – Friday from 7:30am to 6pm, Saturdays 7:30am to 2pm.
Head across the river for our newest market The Northside Creators Market, held in the Picaroons Roundhouse. This is also a Saturday-only market, open from 8am – 2pm. Here you’ll find some of the former Northside Market vendors and many new creators. *Please note that masks are required.
Next up is the EcoMarket at 241 Canada Street.
The Ville Cooperative launched this new ECO market last summer that promotes sustainable living! You’ll find environmentally conscious arts, crafts, fresh produce, and no plastic products. The market takes place on Fridays from 4 – 6pm and Saturdays from 9am – 12pm. Stop by for all things local, fresh and eco-friendly!
Food Market at the Ex, Provincial Exhibition Grounds, 361 Smythe Street.
A new “grab and go” food market opened in June, offering a wide variety of international flavours, featuring 10 vendors with fair ranging from Greek, Syrian, Jamaican, Korean and Mexican. The market runs Fridays 11am – 7pm and Saturday 9am – 4pm.
Stay anther day and spend your Sunday exploring – there are even more nearby markets to discover!
Day 2 – Sunday
This seasonal outdoor farmers' market is located in the beautiful Village of Gagetown. We suggest taking the scenic drive which will have you cross the Saint John River in Lower Jemseg to Gagetown on the beloved Gagetown Ferry. The ferry runs daily and is FREE! The market is open Sundays, 11am – 3pm until October 4 and is the perfect place to find local produce, baking, treats, cider, flowers, gift items, and more. While there, spend time strolling through the quaint village browsing the artisan shops and historic sites.
On your way to or from Gagetown watch for two country farm stands on Route 105 in Maugerville!
Moxon’s Country Pumpkin
Moxon’s grow and pick fresh veggies daily from their fields so there’s always a great variety of fresh vegetables available. There’s a wonderful bakery onsite with homemade breads, rolls and goodies. The farm animals are a big hit with the kids!
Harvey’s Big Potato – Silver Valley Farms
You’ll know you’re there when you see the giant potato on the side of the road! The Big Potato has been gracing Maugerville since 1969 and farming for decades. They sell everything from apples to zucchini, much of it from their own farm fresh produce.
We look forward to the return of the Garrison Night Market, which was cancelled the summer of 2020 due to the large crowds it gathered and COVID-19 restrictions. This art and food infused farmers market began in June 2018 and attracts thousands to the downtown each Thursday evening. The market runs from 4:30 – 9pm, on Carleton Street in the Historic Garrison District and had more than 120 vendors offering local and imported handmade products, art, craft and design, clothing, locally grown farm products, local microbrews, ciders, wines and meads, youth entrepreneurs, buskers, and of course, food!
A stage set up near the 104th Regiment of Foot pedway hosts local and touring musical entertainment adding to the festive atmosphere. Each week features new vendors and entertainment! Be sure to put this market down on your must-do's for summer 2021!
