Watercolours on the Go

This workshop will begin at the NB College of Craft and Design, but will also include various Fredericton locations.

Participants will have opportunities to paint in gardens, heritage streetscapes, interiors and other locations around Fredericton (outdoor locations will be weather dependant).

Katie’s approach to fast watercolours is not traditional classic watercolour. She begins with an ink drawing – very light and loose, and then adds colour. The ink basically defines the space, and the paint takes it from there. Participants will be working in books rather than on watercolour pads.

This is a great way to illustrate in travel journals, and this approach keeps things from becoming too precious.

The objective is to create an image that brings back personal memories, rather than to strive for each effort to be in the National Gallery. For many people, this is extremely liberating.

Katie FitzRandolph
Born and raised in Fredericton, N.B., Katie FitzRandolph retired to her home town after “working away” for about 40 years.

During that time she worked across Canada as a journalist covering legislatures, municipal politics, fires, snowstorms and the arts.

She studied pottery in Regina and continued in Winnipeg as a partner in the studio Mostly Stoneware, and had work in juried exhibitions in Italy and nationally in Canada.

In Toronto, she studied figure drawing and was a member of the art group Central Connection.

In Fredericton, she maintains a painting studio in the Charlotte Street Arts Centre, working in oil, watercolour and encaustic.

Katie’s paintings are in the permanent collection of the University of New Brunswick as well as many private collections.

She is currently president of the Fredericton Arts Alliance, an advocacy group that supports and encourages the arts in Fredericton.
