A Celebration of Earth Day

Offered in partnership with the Mi’kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre at the University of New Brunswick, Opolahsomuwehs (the Centre’s Elder-in-Residence, Imelda Perley) will host a Thirteen Moon Teachings session at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in celebration of Earth Day.

The Thirteen Moon Teachings are based on ancestral knowledge that is rooted in the Wolastoqey language. These sessions provide an opportunity for participants to honour each other as teachers, learners, and humble earth-walkers as we listen to one another.

This event will begin with a pipe ceremony outdoors to honour our first mother, the earth. Then we will move indoors by the Grandfather Akwiten Canoe, built by the Wolastoqiyik approximately 180 years ago. A talking circle will be formed and stories about ceremony, vision, commitment, community-mindedness, gratitude, sacrifice, and forgiveness will be shared.
