Art comes alive in Fredericton this summer!

Fredericton is home to hundreds of talented artists, and this summer you are invited to see some of them in action. Whether you are hiking the trails of Killarney Lake Park, exploring the Fredericton Botanic Gardens, or visiting downtown Fredericton - keep an eye out for artists at work this summer!

Fredericton has four Artist in Residency programs running all summer long. Each program has a unique lineup of artists ranging from painting, dance, filmmaking, weaving and more – letting you fully indulge in Fredericton creative arts scene.

Here’s our tips for how to experience Fredericton’s art scene this summer, through four unique artists in residence programs.

The City of Fredericton’s summer Artist in Residence program returns to Odell Park at the Fredericton Botanic Garden and Killarney Lake Park on the Northside. For two-weeks, artists leave their studios and work in the great outdoors, or as we like to call it, “en plein air”.

You are invited to visit the artists at work Monday to Friday at both locations, free of charge! Artists set-up wherever inspiration strikes them in the park. To find the artists, follow them on social media or refer to the signs posted at the entrances. See how artists use the park and garden spaces as inspiration or as sources of materials to incorporate into their creations.

For two decades, the Fredericton Arts Alliance has hosted a series of week-long residencies from June to September. Featured artists work on their creations and explain their process to visitors. The Arts Alliance goal is to foster awareness of the talented and thought-provoking work produced by Fredericton artists, to add to the community's support of our artists, and to involve the community in the local arts scene.

The theme of this summer’s program is ‘Breaking Out’. It seems like a rather appropriate theme after two years of varying degrees of lock-down – and also appropriate to the idea of moving beyond one’s current scope of practice into a new dimension. Artists were invited to reflect on this theme as they work and challenge themselves to break out of their mold. Artists can be found at various pop-up locations running workshops, sales and more.
