Ladle UP! Getting the Scoop on Soup in Fredericton

I don’t know about you, but I am a year-round soup lover.  It can be humid and +25 degrees (remember those days?) and I will still delight in a delicious bowl of soup.  It doesn’t need to be chilly outside, but for those chilly weather soup eaters, you’re in luck! There’s just enough winter to justify a warm bowl of ‘er; and let’s face it – after walking or running on our beautiful trails, there’s nothing better to warm up the tummy.

I’m picky though, and have been known to scour the city of Fredericton for that perfect bowl.  Whether you are looking for a liter to share with family or a single serving, I am very happy to share with you the results of my soup intel!

Vegan Yumminess

Top marks on these delectable vegan soups!

Milda’s Pizzas & More | 732 Charlotte Street - Did you know that Milda’s has more than their delicious wood-fired pizzas?  They also serve up some pretty tasty soups! Milda’s post specials on their Facebook page on a daily basis, so keep a look out for flavours such as Carrot Lentil or Sweet Potato & Coconut.

The Abbey Café & Gallery | 546 Queen Street - This downtown resto is a funky little spot with highly coveted elevated window seats and a great variety of vegan menu items! Included in this are their soups, where you can sample flavours like Broccoli Tahini, Curried Sweet Potato, Lemon Chickpea or Mushroom Miso, featured on a rotational basis.

Battle of the Lentils

This is not an actual historical event, but it can be! I personally LOVE anything to do with lentils; so versatile and delicious (not to mention so healthy!)

Cinnamon Café | 469 King Street - This café has a wide variety of vegan dishes; among them is their comforting Lentil Soup.  This comes with a side of pita bread or pita chips.

The Sphinx | 526 Queen Street - The Sphinx Restaurant does a great job with their lentil soup.  Smooth, creamy and it is FREE with any main course!

The Sphinx

Byblos Restaurant & Bar | 215 Queen Street - Fredericton’s newest Lebanese restaurant, Byblos has some pretty tasty dishes, among them is their delicious lentil soup that came with crispy pita chips. Exactly what you need on a chilly day!

Saffron Indian Foods | 435 King Street - Find this little gem at the Cultural Market. Their Lentil soup, or “Sambar” is lovely to look at as well as to eat.

An Ode to Non-traditional Soup Flavours!

This is NOT your mama’s Chicken soup! (Not that there’s anything wrong with this yummy staple), but if you are looking to change it up a bit, you’re in luck!

Chess Piece Patisserie | 361 Queen Street - This little pastry shop is big on flavours; not only serving up decadent desserts, but their home-made sandwiches, daily scones and quiches and soup are always guaranteed to make your stomach smile! With soup varieties like Creamy Roasted Veg or Tortiere Cream of Mushroom, order a single serving or ask for a liter to go! Also be sure to grab a sweet treat for later (I mean, you deserve it, right?)

Chef Rick’s Catering | 665 George Street - Chef Rick, located at the Fredericton Boyce Farmers Market, features his menu early in the week where you can pre-order many family sized items to pick up on Saturdays, including liter size soups.  Choose from flavours such as Fire Roasted Tomato Basil, Maple Bacon Corn Chowder and more!

Betty Lee’s – Baking Paradise | 608 Queen Street - Are you a Pho fan? Then you need to try their Chicken or Beef Noodle Pho Soup as well as the Vietnamese Rice Noodle Soup. Looking for mo pho? Try Tokyo Ramen and No. 1 Noodle’s pho soups!

Betty Lee's - Baking Paradise

Happy Baker | 169 Dundonald Street - A Fredericton staple, the Happy Baker, located on Dundonald Street (the old Tingleys) has soup by the liter, with flavours like Zuchinni Parmesan and Spicy Cajun Chicken. Pair this with some fresh Happy Baker bread and you have the makings of a delicious lunch!

Buttercream Dreams | 510 E Brookside Drive - Specializing in all things sweet, they also offer some unique soup flavours.  Choose from Dill Pickle Chip, Pulled Pork Chili or Ham and Cheesy Potato, to name a few! Buy them by the liter and receive free beer bread. (Also, don’t forget to get your sweet tooth looked after by snagging a cupcake or four!

I love the variety of soups from our local Fredericton restos! It literally warms the soul, especially when you #SupportFredLocal! But all this talk of soup is getting me hungry, and maybe a tad thirsty! What about pairing your soup with a Winter Brew? Check out our blog to get the low down on some awesome winter craft beverages! This list is by no means all encompassing; did we miss your favourite soup spot? Let us know in the comments!
