8 ways to enjoy plant-powered eating in Fredericton

One of the first things we do in any new town is ask where to find the vegan options, those restaurants who excel at delicious plant-based fare. And we’re not alone. According to a 2018 study, one in 10 Canadians identifies as vegan or vegetarian, and with the release of Canada’s plant-powered food guide earlier this year that number is expected to rise.

The good news is that Fredericton’s food scene is keeping up with the move to plant-based eating. When we threw out the call to our local vegan community, the recommendations came pouring in. We’ve rounded up some of our favourite personal favourites for every occasion.

Gather the gang for brunch

Fredericton fave Isaac’s Way serves up vegan options throughout the day, but as a brunch spot it’s hard to beat with a mouth-watering vegan Hollandaise sauce drizzled over the vegan poutine or smoked tofu Benedict.

Break for lunch

The Abbey Café was one of the first restaurants in the city to boast an exclusively vegan menu and they quickly developed a devoted following for their paninis, burritos, bowls and nachos. We also love that cozy, quirky Café Loka offers vegan versions of most lunch options and mouth-watering vegan desserts!

Love having so many #vegan options in our little city. @cafe_loka is a sweet spot for a weekend lunch ⁣ ⁣ #plantbased #vegansofig #whatveganseat #veganfoodshare #veganfood #govegan #crueltyfree #veganism #veganfoodporn #fredericton #wellbeing #holistic

Find a food truck

Since they burst onto the Fredericton food scene last fall, Veg Out’s plant-based take on street food favourites has drawn die-hard vegans and veg-curious types alike. You can find their food truck at various locations during the summer; follow their Facebook page for updates on their location through the week. Hit them up early in the day though, their donairs, souvlakis and chili dogs are known to sell out!

Grab a slice

Tucked in the basement of the Charlotte Street Arts Centre, Milda’s Pizza serves up the best wood-fired pizza in town including a fully-vegan option. You can also find them at the Boyce Farmers Market on Saturdays.

Make a dinner date

Cozy up with the one you love at Cinnamon Café, an intimate downtown eatery. Drawing on delicious Persian cuisine, their fully vegan and vegetarian menu is a feast for the senses. Number One Noodle is one of our favourite dinner spots with a wide range of delicious options including pad thai, pho and tofu rice paper rolls.

On March 13, in an airport in Nairobi, I told @music_est_life that I had decided I would “cut back” on eating meat. Turned out the last meat I ate would be somewhere over the Atlantic on our flight home. I was #vegetarian for the first month back in Canada before I went fully #vegan. I haven’t looked back! Tonight we celebrated six meat-free months for me with a delicious vegan dinner at @cinnamoncafe_freddy -hja #plantbased #vegansofig #veganfoodshare #whatveganseat #govegan #crueltyfree #vegansofinstagram #veganlife #bestofvegan #veganlifestyle #vegangirl

Head to the market (all the markets!)

Fredericton loves its markets and its markets love serving up plant-based options. We love grabbing dim sum and the turmeric rice special from Zensation available at the Food Market at the Ex. On Saturdays, samosas from the Boyce Market are a Fredericton tradition. Yummy Samosas makes it easy for market-goers with a clearly posted vegan menu. Another market favourite is Saffron Indian Foods during the week at the Cultural Market.

Treat yourself to something sweet

If you think vegan food can’t be decadent, think again. Sweeten up your Saturday with a stop by Fuller Confection and From Scratch Bakery at the Boyce Farmers Market. The charming Chesspiece Patisserie has upped their vegan game lately including introducing a vegan cronut and their Queen Street Creamery ice cream truck offers the most decadent vegan-friendly ice cream options right down to the crispy, golden waffle cone.

Catch the buzz (or chill out!) while taking in some live music

Over on Regent Street, the Tipsy Muse is always hopping. This trendy café offers up vegan lattes, vegan bagels and cream cheese and a selection of treats from their in-house vegan baker. Bonus: The Muse boasts an active line-up of live music.

We hope this list has your mouth watering for some delicious plant-based meals. Got a favourite we missed? Share it on the comments or tag us (@Upwell.Life) on Instagram or Facebook.
