Fredericton Will Celebrate Canada Day After All

Fredericton Will Celebrate Canada Day After All

For Immediate Release - May 20, 2020

Don’t put away your red and white just yet Fredericton.  The city’s Canada Day Committee is going ahead with a community celebration in a new and unique way due to Covid-19 to mark Canada’s 153rd birthday.   As previously announced, their traditional celebrations will not be taking place because of the pandemic but planning is now underway for a two part celebration.

“Thanks to tremendous support from Heritage Canada and the City of Fredericton we feel we have a plan to both celebrate Canada and show off what a great city we have and to do so in a safe and responsible manner” says committee co-chair Paul Wentzell.

The committee will be hosting a full day of live musical performances which will be live streamed and feature the best of Fredericton’s musical community.  Also, as part of Canada Day, the committee will be issuing a decorating challenge for every household in the city.

“With the cancellation of festivals like ours throughout the summer the impact on performing artists and supporting businesses has been devastating” says committee co-chair Charles Barry.  “We see this as a great way to support this local industry and for the entire city to celebrate”.

The live performances will take place in the ballrooms at the Fredericton Inn which will allow performers and production staff adequate space to safely set up and perform and allow a high-quality video presentation for the live stream.

“And while we provide the music we hope everyone will participate by sharing video of their Canada Day celebrations at home while they enjoy the show.  We want the entire city to celebrate Canada Day together even while we are apart” says Barry.

In addition to the live stream musical presentation the committee is also issuing a challenge to Frederictonians to show their pride in Canada by decorating their homes and properties for Canada Day. “We want to see every inch of the city covered in red and white and we want the entire country talking about what great national pride and community spirit we have in Fredericton.”  says Wentzell. “Start planning now and get the whole family involved”.

To further encourage participation and create some fun, the committee will be announcing a unique contest for the decorating challenge. That announcement along with a full schedule of performers, and live stream details of the musical show will be made in a couple of weeks.
