FREDERICTON (NB): An increase in overnight visitors helped Fredericton’s tourism sector continue to see gains in 2018 with an increase of 3% in total room sales for the year.

Room sales, a critically important gauge of tourism activity, was at 343,000 in 2018.  An increase of 7% over the last two years.

This marks more than a decade of growth in the tourism industry.

“It was another great tourism season” said Stacey Russell, Manager of Fredericton Tourism. “Fredericton continues to experience growth over the last decade. It shows the market was ready to meet the recent investments of Fredericton’s newest hotels”.

The City continues to benefit from the exchange rate with the U.S. dollar and strong visitation from Ontario and Quebec. Almost all sectors of the industry were up including strong performances from sport tourism as well as motor coach tours which are up 9% over 2017.

“We’re continuing to see an overall growth trend in tourism with the industry being a key pillar in the local economy,” says Russell. “With the addition of new hotels in Fredericton it’s important we continue to grow visitor demand.“

All indicators are pointing to another good tourism year in 2019, Russell says. “With the U.S. dollar still high, Canadians will continue to choose home territory.  We’re also seeing strong motor coach bookings, good convention sales and a strong sport tourism sector”.
