Berkley B1 Tour Announces Fredericton and Saint John River for Major Bass Tournament

For immediate release: September 20, 2018

FREDERICTON (NB): Beginning in the fall of 2019, Fredericton will play host to a major smallmouth bass fishing tournament on the Saint John River as part of the Berkley B1 Tour.  Fredericton Tourism expects the profile of being on the tour will help establish the Saint John River as one of Canada’s great smallmouth bass fishing destinations.

Boats for the tournament, featuring 150 top professional anglers from Canada and the United States, will be launched from Carleton Park, October 5-6, 2019. The announcement was made today in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield Quebec by Ben Woo, President of the Berkley B1 Tour.

Fredericton will be the only tour stop east of Quebec and is expected to be on the tour for at least the next three years.

“We want to make this an annual event. It will put Fredericton and the Saint John River on the map as a smallmouth bass fishing destination for anglers.  We’ve been working with Berkley B1 tour officials for several months to plan the logistics. They’re thrilled with Carleton Park, we think it’s a world class home base for the tournament,” says Bobby Despres, sport tourism coordinator with Fredericton Tourism. “This is a great sport tourism announcement for Fredericton. The competitors traditionally arrive in town up to five days prior to the start of the tournament to fish the river. It’s going to have a significant impact on our tourism sector.“

The Berkley B1 Tour event is expected to have an immediate economic impact of almost $600,000 for the Fredericton.

“The economic impact on hotels and the tourism industry is welcomed, and we’re really excited about the opportunity to position Fredericton and the Saint John River as one of the top bass fishing destinations in Canada,” said David Seabrook, Manager of Fredericton Tourism. “We think the area has tremendous potential and we’ve been looking for a tournament partner that can carry our story into the smallmouth bass fishing world. The Berkley B1 Tour is the premier bass fishing tour in Canada. We’re convinced that once all those professional anglers experience the great Saint John River, they’ll be spreading the word that we’ve got something really special here.”
