Bard in the Barracks - An Immersive Theatre Experience

For more than a decade now, Bard in the Barracks Theatre Company has been bringing the works of William Shakespeare to life with site-specific theatre productions that use downtown Fredericton’s stunning architecture and green spaces as both a set and a stage for these timeless works. The tradition continues this summer as the company prepares to stage two classic plays told by a combined cast made up of more than 20 actors!

This season’s performances get underway with one of Shakespeare’s most humorous stories, The Comedy of Errors, a fun, funny and fast-paced tale bursting with slapstick and physical comedy. Bring a blanket or seat cushion down to Barracks Square and enjoy this amusing tale of mistaken identity set amongst the square’s historic casemates.

And then it’s over to Odell Park as the company takes audiences on an epic two and a half hour journey through the park’s many pathways and clearings as the world of Richard III comes to life. Hidden stages appear amid the dense forest in this ambitious The War of The Roses story as the tyrant Richard seeks to gain control of the throne. Expect murders, ghosts, and all forms of treachery to emerge from behind the many wooded areas as the story builds to its climactic peak with a full cast reenactment of The Battle of Bosworth Field!

"I’m obviously biased, but I think that every year Bard in the Barracks offers the most exciting and unique theatrical experience in Fredericton. Nowhere else do you get to experience theatre outdoors, unprotected from the elements, immersed in the show and amid the sights, smells, and sounds of the city at night." – Len Falkenstein, director.

Dress for the weather, wear some good walking shoes, bring a blanket (and possibly some bug spray) and enter the world of outdoor theatre as Bard in the Barracks helps kick off another exciting season of downtown Fredericton fun.

The Comedy of Errors: June 22 – July 2 in Barracks Square

Richard III: June 25 – July 9 in Odell Park.
