It’s Beer Week in Fredericton!
If you are a lover of the craft brew industry, then there is only one place for you to be from 8 - 12 March 2017... in Fredericton, New Brunswick for Craft beer week! The brainchild of Lloyd Chambers and Doug Williams (King Street Ale House; Brewbakers) it started as a one day event 2013 and has grown to a weeklong celebration. Fredericton Craft Beer Festival (FCBF) is more than just good craft beer; it is cider, mead, good food, and good times.
At the inaugural event in 2013, there were 20 breweries participating, providing 90 different beers to 550 people at the Delta Fredericton. In the years following, the festival increased in size and required a move to the Fredericton Convention Center, where in 2014, the FCBF hosted 45 breweries, 1000+ attendees, and included the first two non-beer participants.
Last year in 2016, the FCBF included an afternoon session that expanded the attendee numbers to 1500+. Represented at these sessions were now 50 different brewers (23 from NB) and over 200 different beers. Non-beer representation has also expanded to include 5 cider and mead producers.
2016 also marked the first expansion into Fredericton Craft Beer Week, including events at various venues in town such as the Ofal-ly good evening held in the Maverick room at the Lord Beaverbrook Crowne Plaza, a tap takeover at King Street Ale House, a day of Beer Education, a 'Down the Keg' 3Km fun run, and a Jazz Brunch at King Street Ale House.
2017 is the 5th anniversary for FCBF, and it aims to bring more of the same, as well as the Down East Brewing Awards; the winners of which will be announced at the festival. If you live in Fredericton and love craft beer, FCBF is for you. If you don't live in Fredericton... what better time for a visit?
This Year’s Events:
Wednesday, March 8th - It's Going to be Offal Again!
The Maverick Room, Crowne Plaza Fredericton | Tickets
Once again at the Maverick Room in the Crowne Plaza, the Offal-ly good evening provides a five-course meal made from the parts of animals people seldom venture to eat. Last year's offering included popcorned beef tongue with salt and vinegar grits, Beef Heart Tartare, and a calf liver Wellington. This year promises to bring the extraordinary again, with a planned menu including pig ear chips, brainnaise, blood sausage, and buffalo sweet breads. Each course is accompanied with a selected craft beer.
(Believe me... I was very trepidatious going into the 2016 event, but in the end, it was all great! I recommend it to anyone with the remotest sense of gastronomic adventure or curiosity.)
Thursday, March 9th - NS Tap Takeover Night
King Street Ale House | Tickets
All 24 taps at KSAH will flow with craft beer from Nova Scotia while people try their hand at trivia night. Pre-purchasing your tickets gets you a glass to keep, plus ten 5oz samples to get you started. Pay-As-You-Go thereafter.
Friday, March 10th - A Day of Beer Education
Crowne Plaza Fredericton | Tickets/Schedule
Located at Crowne Plaza, this is a day dedicated to a variety of topics related to the brewing industry such as malting, fermentation, and cause of "off flavours".
Saturday, March 11th - Fredericton Craft Beer Festival
Fredericton Convention Centre | Tickets
The main event! Two sessions offered, in the afternoon and evening. The evening session has been sold out, but (as of this writing) there are still tickets available for the afternoon session. This year's event is projected to have 1800+ attendees, with plenty of craft beer cider, and mead for all to try.
Sunday, March 12th - Down The Keg 3Km Run
King Street Ale House | Register
If you still have gas in the tank the day after FCBF, come on out for a fun 3Km run. No bibs, no times; just a fun 3Km with a $5 fee that will be donated to the Canadian Diabetes Association. At the end of the run... more beer at King Street Ale House. The kitchen will be open for those who like something to eat with their noontime beverages.
