Going Vegan: Where to Eat

Going Vegan: Where to Eat

One of the biggest obstacles of a vegan is trying to find a place to eat out. Luckily Fredericton has a host of vegan options if you know where to look… or so I’ve been told. I’ve only been experimenting with veganism for a few months and haven’t searched enough to really find out, but I did find a few places to start.

Heading to Fredericton’s downtown Farmer’s Market is the social event of the week, so it was important to make sure to find something there that I could eat. I did stop at Whitney Coffee Company to caffeinate as I have been for years. (Pro Tip: If you’re like me and you need your coffee before you can deal with people, you can enter the far door near the samosa line and not have to push through the crowd inside to get in line.)

Then I made my way to Yummy Samosa. The have a sign outlining their vegan options so you don’t have to be THAT person who holds up the line asking questions about all of the ingredients in their food. As a new “Pragmatic Vegan” and long-time introvert, I appreciate places that just tell me it’s vegan.  Another place to do this is Fuller Confections if you have a sweet tooth. I picked up a Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcake. It’s worth the calories… just do it.

If it’s not Saturday and you’re looking to dine downtown Fredericton, my first suggestion is to hit up “They Abbey Café and Gallery.” They serve healthy vegan and vegetarian meals, but you can add meat so your carnivore friends can come with you.  I’ve tried quite a few of their dishes and have never been disappointed. If I had to pick one to recommend, try the Curried Chickpea Hot Bowl pictured below. As a bonus, they also serve Whitney Coffee Company coffee. If it’s after 5pm, you might want to trade that coffee for some Red Rover Cider. Enjoy it by the glass or pick up a flagon to take home.

Another place that clearly labels the vegan options for you is Isaac’s Way. I didn’t even know they had vegan options until I changed my diet. I just liked the food. I’ve been enjoying the Tofu Veggie Scramble for brunch (top) and the Vegan Coconut Rice for dinner (bottom).

I had been told that Café Loka had a selection of vegan options so I had to stop in and try it out. I ended up with the Panini with grilled veggies. It can also come with cheese and bacon on it for your carnivorous dining guests. Luckily it was nice out, so we got to enjoy the sun out on the patio.

Obviously, this is not a complete list of all of the vegan options in Fredericton. It’s just a few of my favourite places so far. As a rookie vegan, I’d love to hear about some of your favourite dishes in the comments. Perhaps this could result in a future post with a more comprehensive list of all the places that offer delicious vegan options.
